Vasuri Mala is an incarnation of the Goddess enshrined at Kodungallur, and there is a legend about her incarnation.
In the past, there was a demon named Daruka who wreaked havoc in the three worlds. Sri Parameswara (Lord Shiva), unable to tolerate his malevolence, created Bhadrakali from the fire in his eyes to vanquish Darukasura in battle. Bhadrakali succeeded in defeating and slaying Darukasura.
Darukasura's wife was Manodari, the daughter of Mayasura. As it became evident that Darukan would meet his end in the battle with Bhadrakali, Manodari embarked on a penance to seek Lord Parameswara's favor. Despite her rigorous devotion, Lord Parameswara chose not to grant her a boon. Sri Parvati, observing Manodari's unwavering dedication, implored Parameshvara, "Lord, why do you deny Manodari a boon when she is devoutly performing penance?" To this, Sri Parameswaran responded, "She is as wicked as Darukasura, and I did not grant her a boon to prevent the emergence of a similar threat while Daruka is still alive." Sri Parvathi argued that it was not right to abandon dependents, and unable to resist her plea, Lord Parameshwara took action.
Without further ado, Shri Parameswaran extracted sweat from his body and gave it to Manodari. He instructed her, "Take this with you to Bhuloka (Earth) as well. Apply it to people, and they will provide you with what you need."
Manodhari took the sweat-water with her and witnessed Bhadrakali's victory in battle, where she severed Daruka's head and was heading towards Kailasa. Manodari applied the sweat-water to Bhadrakali and the Bhutaganas. Upon contact, Bhadrakali's body became covered in painful boils. Weakened by fever and headache, Devi lay down on the road. The Bhutaganas reported Bhadrakali's condition to Lord Paramesvara. Shree Parameswara, infuriated, created a demon named Khandakarna from his ears and issued him a command. "Son, go and take care of your sister Bhadrakali."
