There was a being who did not fear Exu, and that being was Icu; Death.
Icu had heard about the terrible things Exu had done to the people and asked why Exu acted that way without being punished. Everyone said that no one was brave enough to face Exu directly. Icu said it was she who should deal with Exu and sent a message challenging him to a battle.
And Exu replied:
“I am not afraid of Icu. Let us fight.”
Exu went to his friend Orunmilá and told him about the challenge. Orunmilá asked,
“Who can fight with Death?”
Exu, angered, replied:
“Who can fight with Exu?”
Exu asked Orunmilá to arrange the combat.
The day of the duel arrived. People came from all around to watch, and the city was filled with spectators. Exu let out a roar, challenging Icu. Then Icu advanced, sword and shield in hand, and sang to provoke Exu.
And the battle began.
Exu struck hard with his club, blow after blow. But Icu was faster and more agile. So much so that Icu managed to trap Exu. She threw him to the ground and tore the club from his hand. Icu raised the club over Exu to kill him.
Then cries of alarm erupted from the crowd. Orunmilá rushed to the battlefield and snatched the club from Icu, saving his friend from destruction.
And it was because Exu was defended by Orunmilá that he did not die.
And that is why people say:
“No one can overcome Death. No one can defeat Icu.”
