How The Night Was Born

In the beginning of time, there was only day, there was no night.

Tamakore went into the forest to hunt with his blowgun and caught a black, pot-bellied monkey, a nambu bird, and he saw a lot of wadjoro fruits on the ground.

Tamakore returned home and, while talking to his brother Kerak, he mentioned seeing many fruits on the ground. Kerak asked what kind of fruit it was. Tamakore said it was wadjoro and they would go and fetch it later. They ate the game that Tamakore had brought and went to sleep.

Since there was no night, they slept during the day.

When they woke up, they went into the forest. When they arrived at the spot where the wadjoro was, Tamakore broke a branch and hung his headdress ornament on it. Inside this ornament, the bundle of Teyahnem ome (the night) was kept.

Tamakore told Kerak not to touch the ornament hanging on the branch and climbed up the tree. Tamakore was cutting the branches. He had already cut about three branches when Kerak touched the ornament and took out the package of the night from inside. Using his thumb nails, he squeezed the little bundle: the night was released and everything became dark.

Kerak turned into an armadillo and started eating wadjoro on the ground.

After a long time, Tamakore scraped the branch of wadjoro, put the crumbs in his mouth, and spat them to the side where the sun sets, creating the Mutum bird, which started to sing, calling for the day. Later, he spat to the side where the sun rises and created the cujubim bird, which also started calling for the day.

It was starting to get light.

Tamakore scraped the wadjoro branch again, spat to the other side, and created the jacu bird, which sang, calling for the sun.

The sun rose.

Tamakore came down from the tree and started looking for Kerak. Kerak was inside a hole and said:
