Kidangoor Kandangoran

In the verdant landscapes of Travancore, amidst a collection of lesser-known temples, stood the Subramanian temple in Kidangoor, Ettumaanur district, under the stewardship of local Namboothiris. This temple, though not grand in size or fame, housed a remarkable resident that earned it a distinguished place in local lore; the elephant Kandangoran.

His physical and intellectual presence surpassed that of any elephant known to the region, including the celebrated Thiruneelakandan from Vaikkom temple.

Kandangoran's physique was notably majestic, with long tusks that curved inward, adding an air of nobility that commanded awe during temple processions.

More than his stature, it was his astonishing wisdom and the ability to gauge and react to situations that set him apart. Even during the heightened aggression of the rutting season, Kandangoran maintained a calm demeanor, never harming a soul, setting a standard of behavior rare for his kind.

His autonomy was well respected by those who cared for him.

Kandangoran disliked the constraints typical for temple elephants; he preferred freedom, choosing where to rest or graze. This independence was granted without consequence, as he was known never to abuse it, interacting peacefully with both humans and other animals. Along the northern boundary of the temple flowed a river, where he often found solace among a herd of buffaloes, sharing the cool waters.

Kandangoran was not just a temple elephant but a guardian of his fellow creatures.

He was observed leading the buffaloes to nearby sugarcane fields, carefully opening gaps in fences for them to feed while he stood watch, ensuring they did no damage beyond satisfying their hunger. Despite the abundant food, he never partook of the crops himself, adhering strictly to the unspoken rules set by his human companions.

His intelligence shone brightly in the face of unexpected challenges.
