It is said that one day, the blue jay accepted a divine mission that would make her very useful and set her apart from other animals of her kind in terms of importance.
God had made a request to all the birds, asking for help in spreading the seeds of the araucaria tree so that new pine trees could grow.
Most of the birds in the region ignored God’s request. The blue jay was the only one willing to take on the task. So, God gave her a pine seed.
Upon receiving the seed, the bird placed it in the ground and pecked at it with her beak until the entire seed was buried.
She repeated this act many times with the various seeds she received. Over time, the seeds began to sprout and later grew into beautiful trees.
In this way, a large stretch of land became covered with vegetation, giving rise to a vast araucaria forest. This was only possible thanks to the blue jay.
As a reward for her dedication, God gifted the bird with a kind of blue cloak that covered her body, making her the only bird with feathers of such a hue.
A second version of the legend says that once, the blue jay was sleeping and was suddenly awakened by the sound of an axe. It was a woodcutter trying to cut down the pine tree she was in.
Frightened, the bird flew high into the sky. There, she heard a voice asking her to return to the tree and help protect the forest by planting more pine trees.
The blue jay promptly answered the call. As a sign of gratitude and reward for her help, she was blessed with feathers as blue as the sky.
