Many years ago, there was a great nation whose leader was an elderly elder.
He was a kind warrior, always concerned with the happiness of his tribe.
One day, feeling very tired and sick, sensing that he was about to die, he called his children and told them that when he passed, they should bury him in the center of the oca. He also said:
“Three days after you bury me, a lush plant will sprout from my grave, and in time, it will produce many seeds. When you see the plant grow and beautiful ears appear, do not eat them. Save them and plant them.”
Time went by, the old elder died, and his children did exactly as he had instructed.
And just as the warrior had said, a beautiful plant emerged from his grave, bearing lovely ears full of golden grains.
The warriors were overjoyed, the village flourished, and they began to cultivate corn with great care.
And thus, according to the legend, corn came to be.
