The Story of Mathu

Mathu was a skilled practitioner of Kalarippayattu, the traditional martial art of Kerala. During that time, women from marginalized communities often faced threats of abduction or assault by men in positions of social privilege.

In response to these injustices, a group of women from marginalized communities, including Mathu, chose to learn martial arts as a means of self-defense and empowerment. Mathu soon emerged as their leader, known for her strength and determination.

One day, after returning from her Kalari training, Mathu encountered Ananthan, the commander of the local king’s army. A connection blossomed between them, and they eventually married. However, over time, Ananthan became captivated by Makkom, a striking woman renowned for her skill in dice games, and he began living with her instead.

Mathu's family devised a plan to bring Ananthan back home, feigning that his mother was unwell. Upon his return, Ananthan was furious and challenged Mathu. At that time, a menace existed due to human-animal conflicts, and the King announced a reward for anyone who could kill tigers and lions in the forest. Ananthan asked Mathu to undertake this challenge if she wanted him to return and continue their married life.

With the help of Ananthan's brother Kelu, Mathu disguised herself as a man and ventured into the forest to confront the wild animals. Despite Kelu's fear, Mathu fearlessly fought the tigers and lions, defeating them and bringing their heads and tails to the King. The King rewarded the victorious "man" (as nobody identified her as Mathu) but reneged on his promise to offer his daughter in marriage to the winner.

Incensed, Mathu threatened the King, insisting that he fulfill his promise. The King, frightened by her resolve, conceded, and the Princess was married to Kelu, Ananthan's brother.
